چکیده

Telephone use is one of the most stressful communication situations for stutterers. We investigated a device to modify stuttered speech spoken into a telephone with the goal of ameliorating the stress and providing greater fluency. The device uses signal processing techniques to detect and correct certain types of dysfluencies. To assess dysfluent telephone input, stuttered speech exhibiting repetitions, prolongations, and blocks were recorded and then processed using phonetic classification technology to detect certain types of dysfluencies, and timescale modification to correct them. In a series of experiments, listeners assessed the quality and intelligibility of the dysfluent (unprocessed) speech vs. the fluency-enhanced (processed) speech. Listeners assessed the processed speech as both more acceptable and more intelligible than the unprocessed speech.

Stuttering and social anxiety.

UNLABELLED The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of social anxiety in adults who stutter. This was done by administering the Inventory of Interpersonal Situations (IIS) (Van Dam-Baggen & Kraaimaat, 1999), a social anxiety inventory, to a group of 89 people who stuttered and 131 people who did not stutter. Two components of social anxiety were measured by the ISS, the exte...

Immediate speech fluency improvement after application of the Digital Speech Aid in stuttering patients

BACKGROUND The Digital Speech Aid (DSA) is a pocket-sized device used for speech correction in stutterers. The device modifies the patient's auditory feedback with the use of Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) and Frequency-shifted Auditory Feedback (FAF). Both methods are well-known to improve speech fluency in stuttering persons. The aim of this study was to assess immediate disfluency reduction...

Temporal processing and long-latency auditory evoked potential in stutterers.

INTRODUCTION Stuttering is a speech fluency disorder, and may be associated with neuroaudiological factors linked to central auditory processing, including changes in auditory processing skills and temporal resolution. OBJECTIVE To characterize the temporal processing and long-latency auditory evoked potential in stutterers and to compare them with non-stutterers. METHODS The study included...
